Solutions Insights Lab is an initiative of the Solutions Journalism Network, which works to ensure all people have access to news that helps them envision and build a more equitable and sustainable world.

Since 2023, Solutions Insights Lab has catalyzed action through insights that emerge from deep interviews to connect people, build communities, and create the conditions for sector-wide change.

Ambika Samarthya-Howard

Chief Managing Director

Ambika Samarthya-Howard (she/her) is Chief Managing Director of the Solutions Insights Lab, an initiative of SJN that uses the tools of solutions journalism to help problem-solving organizations connect people, build communities, and create the conditions for sector-wide change. She has an MFA in film from Columbia University and has been creating, teaching, and writing at the intersection of storytelling and social good for two decades. She has produced films for Current TV, UNICEF, Havas, and the United Nations Population Fund. She has spoken at the Skoll World Forum, the Global Philanthropy Forum, Devex World, and the United Nations.

Jenn Rosen

Research Manager

Jenn Rosen (she/her) leads research initiatives and oversees data analysis to identify trends, patterns and insights that support the Solutions Insights Lab’s knowledge-generation work. She has a Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University and continues to teach and conduct research at the intersection of democracy, gender, sexuality and the power of social movements to bring about social change.

Rollo Romig

Manager

Rollo Romig (he/him) manages the Solutions Insights Lab. He is the author of the 2024 book “I Am on the Hit List: A Journalist’s Murder and the Rise of Autocracy in India,” which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.

Miranda Pursley

Impact Research Manager

Miranda Pursley (she/her) co-designs and coordinates research systems to understand how SJN and Solutions Insights Lab projects drive change in communities. Her background is in peacebuilding and participatory research design, with a focus on conflict-affected and underrepresented populations.

Marie von Hafften

Technical Director

Marie von Hafften (she/her) builds and manages websites, provides technical support for products, and builds data collection systems and dashboards. She has a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University with a specialization in technology, media and communications.

Kristen Merritt

Database Associate

Kristen Merritt (she/her) manages organizational data and forms, ensuring data reliability, integrity and relevance, and contributes to the Solutions Insights Lab by adding interviews and news articles to its websites. She is also a neo-soul singer, guitarist, and music producer.

Elizabeth Share

Senior Advisor

Elizabeth Share (she/her) is a senior advisor to Solutions Journalism Network (SJN) and Solutions Insights Lab. Previously, as SJN's Chief of Strategic Relations, she helped shape strategic priorities and led the work to secure the philanthropic revenue that enables SJN to meet its aims. Now, Elizabeth continues to manage a grants portfolio while also serving as a strategic thought and writing partner. Elizabeth is the founder of the consulting practice Wise Giving and previously was Chief Development Officer for The Center for Investigative Reporting.

Catherine Cheney

Advisor

Catherine Cheney (she/her) is an advisor to the Solutions Journalism Network and its Solutions Insights Lab. She serves as senior editor for special coverage at Devex, the media platform for the global development community. Cat, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale, is driven by a belief in the power of storytelling to connect people and ideas, elevate what’s working in response to global challenges and help people see what’s possible.

Raúl Rodriguez

Creative Consultant

Raúl Rodriguez (he/him) bridges Latin American roots with a New York arts-saturated milieu. Buenos Aires-born, he is an animal lover, blogger and piano player; he loves to cook and mingle with creative people. He’s the Creative Director of r.studio.t, which, with more than 30 years of experience, offers solutions to diverse graphic challenges to elevate products and improve audience engagement.

Carolina Gil Posse

Interviewer

Carolina Gil Posse (she/her) is an experienced journalist and communications expert focusing on the environment, climate, and health. She worked at national radio stations as a reporter, host, and news producer, and as the correspondent in Argentina for Radio Nederland Wereldomroep’s Latin American department. As an accredited solutions journalism trainer, she has trained journalists from several countries across the region and is also a researcher on media coverage of climate and health at Lancet Countdown Latin America. She currently leads the Latin America and Caribbean team at the international NGO Health Care Without Harm, where she also manages training programs for Latin American journalists on climate and health coverage.

Carolyn Robinson

Carolyn Robinson (she/her) is an experienced television journalist who has produced and reported for global news media such as CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera. She led Solutions Journalism Network’s broadcast initiatives for many years, and as an international media fellow and development consultant, has trained local journalists, and directed media support programs in two dozen countries around the world.

Holly Wise

Interviewer

Holly Wise (she/her) is a two-time Fulbright-Nehru Teaching Scholar with extensive experience in solutions journalism and academia. She has held multiple roles at the Solutions Journalism Network, including its first director of journalism school engagement and later its first program director. She is a certified leadership and cross-cultural coach based in Bengaluru, India. She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master’s degree in mass communication from Murray State University.

Jessica Kantor

Jessica Kantor (she/her) is an independent journalist and communications strategist specializing in health, human rights, and social impact. She has over 10 years of published work in publications such as Fast Company magazine, Las Vegas Review-Journal, and Healthcare Quarterly magazine and is a leader in designing, developing, and delivering editorial content and communications strategies rooted in meaningful global change.

Priscila Pacheco

Interviewer

Priscila Pacheco (she/her) is a Brazilian journalist based in São Paulo and co-founder of Mural - Agência de Jornalismo das Periferias. She is the co-author of “Unbias the News: Why Diversity Matters for Journalism” and the graphic novel “Minas da Várzea” about women’s soccer in the outskirts. She has received awards for her reporting on violence against journalists and for solutions-focused coverage of São Paulo’s outskirts during the COVID-19 pandemic. She conducts workshops on solutions journalism in Brazil.

Sanne Breimer

Sanne Breimer (she/her) is a freelance journalism trainer, project manager, and adviser for international media organizations including SembraMedia, Thomson Reuters Foundation, European Journalism Centre, Thibi, and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. She founded Inclusive Journalism, aiming to educate primarily Western journalists about media representation and decolonization. Sanne previously worked in national public broadcasting in the Netherlands for almost 13 years, focusing on radio, digital media, and innovation.

Thuỵ Trần (they/them) is a designer, illustrator, and creative technologist drawn to whimsical micro-interactions that spark connection and curiosity. Grounded in the belief that design and technology can be tools for social impact, they are fascinated by the internet as both a medium for art and a channel for sharing accessible information.
